The English term bankroll refers to a player’s or bettor’s capital set aside for playing. It is each individual’s responsibility to manage their funds, but proper bankroll management (also known as money management) is essential for success in sports betting. Bankroll management doesn’t have strict rules but rather general guidelines to help you maximize profits and minimize losses.

Separate personal finances from betting money

This is probably the smartest thing you can do in bankroll management. If you’re serious about betting, you should clearly set aside funds specifically for betting and keep them separate from your personal finances. In practice, you can do this by opening a separate bank account or using an e-wallet such as Skrill or Neteller. This way, you ensure your money won’t get mixed up. If you’re the kind of bettor who likes to place a weekend accumulator for 50 CZK every week, you don’t need to overdo it with separating funds. This recommendation is mainly for regular bettors.

Use a deposit system

A part of bankroll management is having a well-set deposit system. The general rule is that you should not bet more than 5% of your total bankroll on a single bet. This figure can, of course, be adjusted individually (for more peace of mind, you can even use 1%). It also depends on the deposit method you follow. Some use flat staking (placing all bets for the same amount), while more experienced bettors use a unit system (scaling from 1 to 10, where the bet size is based on confidence, odds, or the value of the tip). An even more advanced method is the Kelly criterion.

An example

Avoid tilt

The term «tilt» is mainly used among poker players and refers to the state of a player who has lost a significant portion of their bankroll, either due to their own mistakes or bad luck, and tries to win their money back as quickly as possible. At such times, it’s crucial to stay calm and think rationally. The best thing you can do is analyze whether your losses were due to your mistakes or variance, and take a few days off from betting. If you’re on tilt and betting without thinking, you’ll make even more mistakes and cause greater damage.

Don’t bet under the influence of intoxicants

This is an issue for many bettors. The headline says it all. You should only bet with a clear mind. The worst combination is being on tilt and intoxicated (whether from alcohol or drugs).

Avoid playing in the casino

The vast majority of online bookmakers also operate online casinos. It only takes one click for bettors to start spinning the reels of a slot machine. However, it’s best to avoid this pastime. Unlike sports betting, you can never have an advantage in the casino. While you may randomly hit a huge jackpot, in the long run, the casino will always take some of your money.

Only bet single bets

The more tips you have on a betting slip, the higher the chance that one of them will fail. It’s no coincidence that almost all successful bettors place only single bets. Avoid accumulators and combination bets. Of course, if you’re betting for fun and don’t mind losing, you can ignore this advice and continue your own way.

Conclusion

Following proper bankroll management rules doesn’t have to be too difficult. Just approach betting responsibly and treat it as a potential side income. As is often the case, the toughest times come when things aren’t going well. That’s when everyone wants to make up for losses as quickly as possible. However, that’s precisely when following the rules is most important! Finally, remember that if you’re not betting on odds with a positive expected value, so-called value bets, even the most precisely set bankroll management won’t help you, and at best, you’ll only break even.
