In recent years, mobile games have become significantly popular. While most players in the Western world tend to avoid them, in Asia it is quite the opposite. The popularity of gaming titles for your mobile devices has been leveraged by the Chinese game development studio Moonton. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is a relatively successful mobile MOBA game, released in 2016. It is particularly popular in Southeast Asia. Due to its similarities with League of Legends, its historical journey has not been without certain controversies: Moonton faced several lawsuits from Riot Games over copyright issues, and Mobile Legends was banned in India on suspicions of spying on its players. However, none of this has detracted from the game’s popularity, and a successful esports scene has even emerged, which is not common for mobile game titles. Today, the game has garnered over a billion downloads, and at its peak, there are up to 100 million players online worldwide.

Mobile Legends gameplay

Multiplayer online battle arena (shortly MOBA) is a popular genre of games. They combine the skills of individual players with the importance of strategic decision-making and require the cooperation of the whole team. The same applies to Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. It is available for free download on iOS and Android, but in-game currency can be purchased, which allows you to buy skins for heroes or the heroes themselves.

Heroes

The basic building block of every MOBA game is the heroes, over whom players take control. Each hero has specific abilities and is designed for a predetermined role (tank, marksman, assassin, fighter, mage, support). These roles also determine the tasks of individual players – while one focuses on the greatest possible damage to the enemy, another takes care of healing allies. In addition to their abilities, heroes also use the in-game shop, where they buy items with earned gold (from killing minions and enemies), which enhance their attributes.

Game mode

Each match is played in a five versus five format, and the main objective is to destroy the enemy base, which is defended by turrets that must be destroyed first. Of course, there are also neutral parts of the map (jungle), where neutral monsters can be found, from which experience and gold can be obtained. The game offers two basic modes: Classic and Ranked. The only difference between them is that in Ranked, players receive a rating (elo) after each match, which determines their game division (Elite, Master, Grandmaster, Epic, Legend, and Mythic) – thanks to this arrangement, teams are usually balanced in terms of experience and abilities of individual players. Of course, skills can also be improved by playing against bots (controlled by the system). Moonton also adds a game mode called Arcade, but it can only be played around major holidays. This mode includes various strategic mini-games (Brawl, Magic Chess…).

Esports around Mobile Legends: Bang Bang

In the West, esports for mobile games is not a popular affair, but in Asia, it is rising to prominence. The first tournament officially organized by the development studio Moonton, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Southeast Asia Cup (MSC), took place in 2017 and continues to be an annual event, where the best teams compete. Another major competitive event of international scope is the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang World Championship (also known as M-Series or Worlds). The 2022 finals were watched by three million viewers, making it the most-watched championship in mobile games. Teams qualify for these two largest tournaments in this mobile MOBA game by winning regional competitions (Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League), which are held throughout the year. We have not found any league or tournament in Mobile Legends in the Czech Republic, and Czech bookmakers also avoid offering betting opportunities on this game.
