The console game for PS3, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars, was a significant failure for the development studio Psyonix. Whether it was due to the unnecessarily long name, poor gameplay, or focus on consoles, we will never know. Anyway, they tried again (and thank goodness!) in 2015 with the new title Rocket League. The game was no longer just focused on the PlayStation 3 console but also on PC, which proved to be a wise choice. Versions for Xbox and Nintendo Switch were gradually released. Today, Rocket League operates on a free-to-play business model, supported by internal microtransaction fees. Given the new idea that combines small cars with the charm of football, the game received very positive reviews and gradually won over fans. Not only did Rocket League offer a relaxing experience from overly competitive games, but it also offered a ranked leaderboard for serious enthusiasts. From there, it was just a step to the esports scene, and thanks to the overall action and fast-paced matches, viewers loved it. Sportsbooks soon took advantage of this and still offer betting coverage for car football.
The game is often described as “football, but with rocket-powered cars.” The description is accurate; the player takes control of one of the RC cars, trying to score a goal in an enclosed arena. The most common matches are 2vs2 or 3vs3, but you can also encounter 4vs4 (which is the maximum).

In Rocket League, there are countless different modifications that can be applied to your car. These cosmetic modifications (skins) do not alter gameplay, only the graphical appearance of the cars. Within the game, it is possible to trade skins between player accounts, but Rocket League uses its internal system and not the community marketplace of the Steam platform – the game is available on multiple digital distribution platforms (Epic Games). At the end of 2023, however, the publisher of Rocket League announced the termination of this feature, and any dealings with skins outside your game account will not be possible.
The game Rocket League still enjoys considerable popularity among players and esports viewers, and today we can encounter countless different competitions and leagues. Car football tournaments were, for example, under the auspices of ESL, but the most prestigious (sponsored by Psyonix itself) is the Rocket League Championship Series, in which the strongest teams from around the world (e.g., Team Vitality, Team Liquid, Gen.G, Rule One) compete. In our country, various Rocket League competitions are organized by Playzone, but we couldn’t find a regular Czech league anywhere. Rocket League, with its progressive approach to football, remains a popular game, although the engine and overall gameplay are slowly aging. It is likely that we will still see it on the esports scene for a while, but we dare not predict how long.
