Rust

Steam platform by Valve is home to several major gaming titles that have helped it become number one in the industry (although today this position is threatened by the Epic Games platform and its Fortnite). These popular games include Counter Strike 2, DOTA 2, Team Fortress 2 and Rust. You won’t play these popular titles anywhere else but on Steam.

General information

The development studio Facepunch Studios rode the wave of popularity of survival games in 2013 and came up with their most successful title: the game Rust. At that time, it was still a clone of one of the most popular zombie survival titles – DayZ (the developers themselves admit this). But today, a decade later, Rust has had a remarkable journey, starting with the decision to go a slightly different way than the survival game genre did. Zombies disappeared, game mechanics were adjusted, and trading between users on Steam and the associated game skins (Rust skins – cosmetic additions to game items) came into use. We will look more closely at this journey below.

History of a game that started as a clone

At the end of 2013, players could play Rust for the first time. It was released in early access (alpha version) and its reviews were mixed. This was caused by two factors: at that time, the bag of survival games with undead had burst and the first version suffered significant shortcomings. The developers actively released updates that expanded Rust and slowly gained a lead over the competition. Animals appeared and the possibility of hunting, new weapons and armor, and most importantly, the decision to remove zombies from the game. A year later, a new version – Experimental – was released. It moved the world to a new game engine (Unity 5) and with it came a completely new and randomly generated open world. At the same time, an advanced anti-cheat (program against cheating) appeared, which significantly cleaned the official servers of players using aimbots and similar third-party programs. Characters had skin tones and gender determined by their SteamID, without the possibility of personal choice. At the end of 2015, we first encountered new looks for clothing and weapons. Not by chance, as the Item Store on Steam was introduced. These skins do not affect playability, they are just a cosmetic matter (although some clothing is more visible than others). The player base was not breathtaking at the time, but the first trading transactions between players were taking place. Further changes, adjustments, and improvements to game mechanics followed. A few years later, on February 8, 2018, the game was officially released. The developers’ work did not end there. They continued with optimization updates, error and bug removal, and further expansion of the already vast game world and its possibilities. Interestingly, even before the release, i.e., in the testing versions, over 5 million copies were sold and over a million trading transactions with skins on Steam were made.

What is Rust about?

The simple answer to the question in the title is: survival. As we mentioned at the beginning, it is a multiplayer survival game. Your only task is to survive and as Darwin’s theory says, the strongest will survive. However, the form of strength has many faces. Especially in Rust, where each player starts on a randomly generated island with just a spear and a torch. You need to gather food and drinking water as quickly as possible, build a shelter, and not get eaten by wild animals. Exploring the island will unlock upgrades for your base and the ability to produce better weapons – even automatic ones. However, the island is not deserted. In addition to NPC (computer-controlled characters), other players will complicate your life. And they care not so much about your life as about your stuff. Raiding bases and imprisoning players is a daily routine here, but you can also join other players in the name of preserving the human race. That is, at least until you stab them in the back, because their rocket launcher looks really good. Movement around the island is facilitated by controllable vehicles and machines, among which are helicopters and boats. Under the sea, which washes the shores of the island, lie various forgotten bases and treasures, so for progress in your production possibilities, you will have to go underwater (diving equipment will help you with that). If, however, you do not want to hunt (whether animals or other players), you can engage in farming and collecting items, which you sell to other players. There are countless ways to survive and become the strongest. It’s up to you which path you choose.

Minimum HW requirements

Operating system: Windows 10 Processor: Intel Core™ i7-3770 / AMD FX-9590 Graphics card: GTX 670 2GB / AMD R9 280 DirectX: 11.0 Operational memory: 10 GB Hard disk: 25 GB …and of course, an internet connection.

Game modes / Server types

The game does not have multiple game modes. Each server has its generated island and the adventures that take place on it are determined by the players. Official servers do not offer any special features, whereas community servers can be modified in any way and have their own rules.

Gameplay

Strategic skills play second fiddle here, far more important is being able to shoot an opponent. Of course, a well-placed smoke grenade can give your team an advantage, but to win, you need to be able to aim well. Thankfully, weapon recoil has changed only slightly compared to CS:GO. Players who stand at the top of the esports scene spend long hours just training their aiming. Deathmatches or maps with bots are most suitable for this.

Map

Each island is separately generated, but each always contains player interest locations (monuments, underground bunkers, oil platforms…). It is at these that the toughest fights occur, because they offer the best items.

Weapons and vehicles

An armored man sneaks with his semi-automatic rifle and tries to clear every corner. It doesn’t take long before the silence of the night is cut by terrifying screams. The sound of iron on iron. A gang of other players has ambushed him and they are beating him with their machetes. Gunfire. From both guns and bows. Who will win? One grenade would solve a lot… The game really offers a plethora of weapons and the player must advance from a wooden spear to a crossbow and from there further to shotguns and other firearms. The categories into which the weapons in Rust are divided are as follows:

  • Cold weapons (Melee Weapons)
  • Bows and crossbows (Bows)
  • Pistols (Handguns)
  • Shotguns (Shotguns)
  • Submachine guns (Submachine Guns)
  • Rifles (Rifles)
  • Machine guns (Machine Guns)
  • Explosives (Explosives)
  • Other ranged weapons – e.g., rocket launcher and flamethrower (Miscellaneous Ranged Weapons)

Fleeing from battle or an expedition on the far end of the island? The best means of transport is obviously a helicopter, but a combat one is not easy to come by and the one you build from scrap won’t last long. In addition, new updates have added railways that wind around the island and trains run on them. For individuals who do not like predetermined routes, an armored vehicle is available, and for water fun, several boats and ships are available.

Skins or the golden mine of Steam

Before we jump into the text about cosmetic additions, we must honestly say one fact: no game skins compare to those from Counter Strike 2. They lead not only in sales but also in total number, prices, and popularity. They were the first, and without them, no skin trade would likely have been. However, this does not mean that other skins are worthless. On the contrary! Alternatives are important in every industry, but is Rust a suitable option for potential investors and traders in skins? In addition to weapons, you can also customize your clothing and building elements of your base (doors, chests…). The most expensive skin in the game Rust costs almost fifty thousand crowns (1800 dollars) and surprisingly, it’s studded doors, specifically Metal Tree Door. Followed by slightly cheaper Punishment Mask (1600 dollars) and Alien Relic SMG (1400 dollars). No other accessories reach a thousand dollars, but items for hundreds of dollars can be found. These skins can be obtained either from crates or various themed packages that the developer offers. Rarity and possible exclusivity (i.e., skins that are no longer officially available) determine their price. Just as it was with CS2, many websites focused on Rust have appeared, where unofficial crates can be opened (the price depends on the offered content) and platforms that specialize in trading (online marketplace for skins). As of today, a large number of different skins have been released, but the number of actively trading people remains more or less the same. There are traders who have managed to get rich thanks to Rust, but we don’t know if this is still possible after the initial enthusiasm for the elaborately made game has waned. If you are not a passionate player of this survival game, we do not recommend engaging in trading or investing, as the community waters are quite shallow and Counter Strike 2 is far more lucrative.

Rust as an esport title?

Don’t count on it. This is mainly due to the type of game Rust is. Up to hundreds of players can meet on one server and the island is really vast. Luck also plays a large role, as each island is especially generated. Competitiveness is certainly not missing in the game, but there is no ultimate goal. You can play the game continuously on one island, but there is no end. Projects that tried to break into the world of esports have appeared. For example, RustLeagueEU was one of them, but the length of individual games was enormous. It’s no surprise that interest was not there – neither from players nor from fans. All things considered: the game is a pleasant effort if you like survival games with the possibility of building a base. Whether you’re a lone wolf or have a bunch of fellow players, you will enjoy the game just the same.
