The roots of the most famous roulette systems, Martingale and d’Alembert, go back to 18th century France and they remain very popular to this day not only for their simple rules but especially for their adaptability. The oldest roulette system, however, is based on the Fibonacci sequence, which was discovered by the Italian mathematician as early as the 12th century.
How roulette systems work
These systems are based on the theory of probability and their task is to help players place the best possible bet. They usually assume that at a certain moment a number or color that has not appeared for a long time will come up. However, it is important not to forget that in fair play the outcome of roulette is purely a matter of chance, as it is impossible to influence which slot the spinning ball will stop at. No system or strategy can guarantee a 100% chance of winning.

Even though the basic game of roulette is quite fun and exciting on its own, these systems can make it even more enriching and add a special, almost magical atmosphere to it. Some of them can indeed slightly increase the players’ chances of winning. Above all, however, they help them navigate the game and proceed according to a certain pattern when betting without having to worry about how to proceed further.
The most famous roulette systems
There are a number of different bets that can be placed in the game, but it is worth knowing the five most famous favorites. These are Martingale, Anti-Martingale, d’Alembert, Fibonacci, and Labouchere. In order to easily use and intuitively follow them during the game, players should first practice them thoroughly. It is ideal to play roulette at home for this purpose, writing down individual steps and observations on paper, or for free online on the internet or in a mobile app.
Martingale
This system got its name from a corrupted name of the London casino owner John Henry Martindale. He encouraged players to keep doubling their bets, trying to increase the casino’s profit. It wasn’t until 1891 in Monte Carlo that Charles Wells successfully used this strategy, turning his 4,000 franc stake into 1 million francs. The principle of this betting is thus based on the constant doubling of bets placed on colors, small/large or even/odd numbers after each lost round (spin). The payout ratio of these bets is 1:1. First, the player bets one unit as the base bet, which is doubled in the next bet in case of a loss. If they lose again, in the next round they bet again double the previous bet, i.e. four units, and so on until they manage to win. Once they place a winning bet, they receive an equal payout and start the next game by betting one unit. The disadvantage of this system is that the player needs a really large capital. Most casinos, however, have set a upper limit for the bet amount, so players cannot keep doubling their bets indefinitely.

Anti-Martingale
This system works on the same principle as Martingale, but in this case, the player doubles their bet after each win. Here too, bets are placed on even bets: color, even/odd, and small/large numbers. The player first determines a series (e.g. 5 rounds in a row), where they bet the same bet or regularly alternate two bets. They bet one unit and in case of a win, they leave it on the table or move it to the next bet, until they complete the entire series. The advantage of this strategy is that in the case of a loss, they always lose only one unit.
d’Alembert
A system named after the French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher Jean le Rond d’Alembert, whose principle is again to bet on colors, small/large or even/odd numbers with a payout ratio of 1:1. Again, only one unit is initially bet, and in the case of a win, the series of rounds ends. In case of a loss, the original bet is increased by another unit and in the next win, one unit is deducted. This system allows players to win with a larger amount and lose with a smaller one.

Fibonacci system
A roulette system named after the Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci, who, among other things, contributed to the spread of Arabic numerals in Europe. The Fibonacci sequence is made up of a series of numbers in which each subsequent number is always the sum of the two previous numbers. It starts with 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, etc. Here too, bets are placed on even bets with an equal payout ratio of 1:1. According to the Fibonacci sequence, the player gradually increases their bets. In the first round, they bet one unit and in case of a win, they bet one unit again. In case of a loss, they then continue according to the Fibonacci sequence and bet one unit in the second round. In the third round, they bet two units and so on until they win again. Once they manage to win, they cross off the last two numbers in the sequence (thus moving back in the sequence) and continue according to the same principle.

Labouchere
With this system, players can once again place even bets with the same payout ratio of 1:1, but the principle of this strategy is to cancel bets. First, players choose a number sequence with an even number of numbers (e.g., numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 3, 3, 3, 3, or 10, 10, 10, 10, etc.). They then bet the number of units according to the sum of the first and last number in the sequence. In case of a win, this sum is added to the created number sequence. In the next round, the player again determines the bet amount by summing the first and last (newly added) number in the sequence, and so on, as long as they win. In case of a loss, the first and last number in the number sequence is crossed out and the next bet is placed from the originally second and second-last number (newly the first and last number). If the player fails to win in the entire series, their loss is limited only by the capital divided according to the number sequence and there is no risk of recklessly losing all their savings. However, the player can end the number sequence at any time and start again.
Reverse Labouchere
This roulette system can also be played the other way around, where numbers in the sequence are crossed out when winning and sums are added when losing. The risk of this strategy, however, lies in the rapidly increasing bet amounts. In this case too, however, the player can decide at any time to leave the number sequence and create a new one, just as they can completely change the strategy and try another roulette system.

James Bond betting system
The popular film character Agent 007 bets on two dozen (adjacent) in the amount of 200,000 francs. His bet covers almost 2/3 of the playing field and any win is paid out to him in a ratio of 1:2. However, if a number from the third dozen or 0 comes up, he loses, which can be avoided in French roulette with a slight improvement. By betting a proportional amount on small numbers (1 – 18) and the rest on six numbers 19 – 24, he covers two adjacent dozens. If 0 comes up in French roulette, bets are frozen and the next round decides whether to win or lose. Without frozen bets when zero comes up, however, this bet loses its meaning. It is possible to divide the entire stake even more, and besides betting on small numbers and six numbers up to 24, place a bet also on 0 separately.
